Colostrum: Why is it important?

When pigs are born their immune systems are not fully developed. Piglets rely on immunity being passed to them through their mother and the first milk she produces. This first milk is called colostrum and it contains many of the immune and growth factors necessary for life. The health and survival of newborn piglets is greatly dependent on the ingestion of colostrum after birth.

The ability of the newborn piglets to absorb the antibodies in colostrum is at its peak within the first few hours of life and decreases over time.  Antibodies are absorbed through the gastrointestinal walls and serve to jumpstart the newborn’s immune system. It is essential to feed colostrum shortly after parturition (birth), before the gut closes off and passive transfer is no longer possible.
