Colostrum: Why is it important?

When deer are born, their immune systems are not fully developed. Newborns rely on the passive transfer of antibodies and nutrients from their mother through the first milk she produces called colostrum. Not only does colostrum contain immunoglobulins and bioactive proteins, it is also higher in fat, protein and solids: all of which are crucial to newborns’ survival. These important hormones and growth factors are absorbed through the gastrointestinal walls and serve to jumpstart the newborn’s immune system. It is essential to feed colostrum shortly after parturition (birth), before the gut closes off and passive transfer is no longer possible.
